A Father of Note

James Slater Gibson was born in 1901 to Charles Hansford Gibson Sr. and Maggie Eleanor Chiles Gibson. The family lived on the campus of the Tuskeegee Institute, now known as Tuskeegee University, where Charles was building a career.

Charles Hansford Gibson Sr. held a variety of roles during his tenure at the Tuskeegee Insitutute, primarily serving as a financial record keeper. His dedication to the school and its commitment to educating Black Southerners did not go unnoticed by the Institute's first President and Principal, Booker T. Washington, who wrote to Charles on multiple occasions to offer his praise and thanks.

My dear Mr Gibson;

Your letter has
just reached me and I write
to say that unless you wish the
matter to go before the financial
committee for discussion in my
absence I think it best to have
the matter deferred till I return.
Your work in every way has
been so satisfactory that I do
not think any one will hesitate
about making matters satisfactory
with you so far as your new
plans are concerned.
I was very glad to hear of the
contemplated change in your life
and congratulate you heartily.
By the time I return I shall
have some suggestions to make
in regard to your visit to
Hampton.

Yours Sincerely

Booker T. Washington
